Rescued human trafficking victims
Some 17 foreign nationals suspected to be members of a cyber fraud syndicate have been arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) National Enforcement Team.
Others, numbering 85, believed to be victims of human trafficking have been rescued in Dawhenya.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Immigration in charge of Public Affairs, Maud Anima Quainoo, said the GIS National Enforcement Team stormed a facility opposite China West Mall in the early hours of Sunday, 26 July 2026.
The raid was triggered by complaints from residents who reported suspicious activities at the location.
Led by Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Atubga Elijah, the statement said officers secured the premises and intercepted 102 West African nationals.
“Preliminary checks showed that 85 of them — 79 males and 6 females — were trafficking victims allegedly lured into forced labour for cyber fraud operations.
“The remaining 17 were identified as suspected syndicate members and were also found to be in Ghana illegally,” the statement indicated.
The statement said officers found clear evidence of physical abuse and poor living conditions, especially among the male victims, who were reportedly manhandled and confined.
Six female victims and the 17 suspected ringleaders — are being held at the GIS Headquarters in Accra for further interrogation and profiling.
Also, the 79 male victims have been moved to a secure GIS facility while the Service coordinates with other state agencies for their safe repatriation.
GIS noted that the main organisers of the network were not at the facility during the raid adding that investigations are ongoing to track them down.
