Data Hacker Busted

The Cyber Crime Unit of the CID Headquarters has apprehended a 31 year old man for allegedly hacking into an online portal of a service provider and stealing data bundle worth GH¢115,000.

Suspect Danny Gblonya, according to the police, later sold the data to unsuspecting customers at a cheaper price.

He is said to have been doing this business since February this year.

Briefing the DAILY GUIDE, the Director in charge of the Cyber Crime Unit, Chief Superintendent Dr Gustav Herbert Yankson, said On May 7, this year, the  Internet Service Provider (name withheld) reported to the Cybercrime Unit  that their online portal, where customers purchase data bundles, had been hacked and data bundle worth GH¢115,000 fraudulently allocated to some customers.

Preliminary investigations revealed the identity of the intruder as Danny Gblonya.

He said Police intelligence led to the arrest of suspect Danny Gblonya on May 10, 2018 at his hideout in Accra. Further investigations also revealed that suspect purchased 8 data SIM cards of the service provider, allotted data bundles to them through the portal without authority and sold same out to friends at cheaper prices.

“Our investigations also revealed that suspect employed a software that spied on the backend codes of the website, identified vulnerability and exploited it.”

In his caution statement, Dr Yankson said Danny admitted committing the offence and is currently on bail.

“He has provisionally been charged for unauthorised circumvention and stealing and would be put before court soon for prosecution,” he added.
