Discussions On 2021 Minimum Wage Underway

THE NATIONAL Tripartite Committee has begun negotiations on the minimum wage for 2021, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced.

He disclosed this when he graced the commemoration of the National May Day celebration at the forecourt of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra on Monday.

The President said his administration would ensure that no worker lost their job as a result of the current economic situation precipitated by COVID-19.

He said the government was working to ensure that no worker was affected particularly with the implementation of some prescribed measures to sustain Ghana’s growth and fiscal stability.

President Akufo-Addo also said he has decided to freeze salary increments for 2021 for the vice president, ministers, deputy ministers, all his appointees and himself to reduce the stress on the public revenues.
Commenting on the theme for the celebration, “Economic Recovery in an Era of COVID-19; The Role of Social Partners,” he entreated leadership of workers in the country to champion the wearing of face masks, and observe the other protocols to keep the spread of the pandemic low in Ghana.

He said government was working seriously to secure vaccines. “So we can hope to return our country, our economy and our lives to normalcy.”

He announced that on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, government would receive 350,000 more doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines from the WHO COVAC Facility to continue the inoculation process.

Also, he said by May 15, 2021, the government would have procured some 1.3 million Sputnik vaccines from Russia to help in the determination to vaccinate 20 million Ghanaians by the end of the year.

The President called on workers to acclimatise with the remarkable changes in the work environment as a result of COVID-19.
