Romelu Lukaku
Glen Johnson has claimed Romelu Lukaku is not suited to the Premier League and believes Chelsea are making a mistake in bringing the Belgian back to Stamford Bridge.
The 28-year-old is closing in on a £98million return to England from Inter Milan, with the Italian side looking to ease their financial woes.
Lukaku scored 42 goals in 74 Serie A appearances in Italy after arriving from Manchester United in 2019, and fired Inter to their first league title over a decade last season.
But former Blues defender Glen Johnson, speaking to BettingOdds.com, is not convinced Lukaku will be able to bring his Serie A form to England.
“I’m not so sure the Premier League suits Lukaku to be honest,” Johnson said.
“Obviously he’s a big, powerful lad, quite physical but I just think the Premier League’s a bit too quick for him.
“So no, I wouldn’t like to see him return. But in certain leagues, he is going to get goals, albeit at a slightly slower pace.”
Johnson is much keener on a potential move for West Ham’s Declan Rice, who has long been linked with a move away from the Hammers.
Chelsea are one of the clubs believed to be interested if the 22-year-old became available, and Johnson says he would be a good fit for the Blues.
“I think they can do with him because of the legs,” he said. “He’s got a lot of energy, he charges around and he’s super passionate so I think he would suit the club.
“As long as he leaves the Hammers on good terms then they will still love him.
“I think he would suit this current Chelsea team. Imagine the legs of him and Kante! I’d like to see that for sure.”
