Dormaa Police Refuse To Arrest NDC Chairman For Electoral Violence

Kofi Paul on hospital bed after the assault on him

Kofi Paul, a member of the Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Regional capital, has appealed to the Dormaa Divisional Police Command to immediately arrest the National Democratic Congress Dormaa Chairman, Kofi Ansu Power, for allegedly assaulting him.

Kofi Paul, who is currently nursing wounds he allegedly sustained as a result of the beatings he received from the NDC chairman on the election day, said he was hospitalized at Presbyterian Hospital at Dormaa after the incident.

Paul said although he reported the case to the Dormaa Ahenkro Police for investigation, arrest and possible prosecution, the police in the district had failed to discharge their duties to date.

The victim said he had asked his lawyer, Nana Obiri Boahen Ansah to file a writ of mandamus in court to compel the police to carry out their rightful duties.

Paul told DAILY GUIDE that on the fateful day, he and other NPP members were sent to Dormaa – Danyame to monitor the elections, adding that they were trailed by Kofi Ansu and his men while travelling from one polling station to the other.

He said that when Ansu and his men caught up with them, he warned them to be circumspect of their activities in the constituency since they were not from Dormaa.

He said he saw three guns in Ansu’s car so later reported him to a combined military and police team who retrieved the guns from him.

According to Paul, after close of polls when he and his guys were returning to Sunyani, they were again trailed by Ansu alias Dormaa Naaba, who subsequently assaulted him and the driver.

Paul said he fell unconscious and was rushed to Presbyterian Hospital at Dormaa where he was treated and discharged.

He later reported the case to the police who have failed to carry out their duties.

Divisional Police Commander of Dormaa Ahenkro, Chief Superintendent Patrick Asante, speaking to DAILY GUIDE on phone, confirmed that Paul’s lawyers had notified them about their intention to proceed to court.

The police boss wondered why Paul did not honour an invitation by the police to write his statement.
