The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region has recovered GH¢4.3 million from illegal connections between January and June this year.

Speaking to the media, the General Manager of ECG in the Western Region, Ing. Emmanuel J. Ofori, said the illegalities were uncovered during revenue protection and monitoring exercises aimed at clamping down on illegal connections.

He explained that, during the period under review, a team visited the Sekondi, Takoradi, Agona, Tarkwa and Sefwi Wiawso districts as part of routine checks.

Ing. Ofori stated that ECG, in collaboration with the police, had established a police unit to assist the region in clamping down on illegal connections and other related activities.

He further said ECG was vigorously pursuing customers engaged in illegal connections and warned that offenders would be made to face the law.

He urged members of the public to report suspected illegal connections to ECG to help curb the menace.

For his part, the Revenue Protection Manager, Ing. Eric Agyeman, said the team identified various forms of illegal connections during its visits, including meter tampering, meter bypasses and unauthorised service connections.

Ing. Agyeman disclosed that a total of 2,367 customers were screened across the various districts, resulting in the recovery of 3.64 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity.

“Illegal connections rob the company of its expected revenue and adversely impact commercial losses,” he pointed out.
