Rapper Edem was yesterday hauled before a Kaneshie Magistrate Court for knocking down and killing a 40-year-old woman on the George Walker Bush Highway in Accra.

The rapper, whose real name is Denning Agbeviadey Anthony, has been charged with one count of careless and inconsiderate driving contrary to Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act and another count of negligently causing harm contrary to section 72 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).

His plea was not taken by the court, but he was released on a GH¢50,000 bail with two sureties, and is to reappear in court on February 15, 2024.

The offence of careless and inconsiderate driving caries the punishment of a fine of up to GH¢24,000 or an imprisonment term not exceeding five years or both.

Negligently causing harm contrary to section 72 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) is a misdemeanour.

A court document indicates that on December 10, 2023, at about 2am, the 36-year-old rapper  was driving a Honda Touring saloon car with registration number GX 301 1-19 from Abeka Junction heading towards Spintex road through the George Walker Bush Highway and occupied the middle lane.

It said on reaching a section of the road few metres from Dimples roundabout, he knocked down an unidentified female adult pedestrian aged about 40 years who emerged onto the highway from the right side.

“The victim sustained serious injury and she was rushed to Police Hospital for treatment, but she was pronounced dead on arrival by the medical officer on duty,” the document indicated.

It adds that the body of the yet to be identified woman has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
