Ghanaians seem so divided over electoral or political issues that even an occasion for celebration can be turned into an opportunity for attacks and insults.
On May 10, 2020, the Electoral Commission (EC) took to social media to wish all mothers in Ghana and around the world a happy Mother’s Day.
On its Facebook page, the election body shared an art work bearing an image of its Chairperson, Jean Mensa, with the message “Happy Mother’s Day. God bless all mothers.”
One would have thought Ghanaians would put aside their political differences aside and collectively joined the EC in wishing all mothers a happy Mother’s Day.
But rather, some seized the opportunity to rained insults and curses on the Chairperson of the Commission.
One Facebook user with the name Realboy Busia commented under the EC’s message in reference to Mrs Mensa “ur household will never find peace until you change ur mind of compiling a new register.”
Another user named Mohammed Sualley wrote: “you shall celebrate your next Mother’s Day with the title “The axed EC Commissioner Only a matter of time.”
Some however, joined the EC in wishing mothers a happy Mother’s Day.
