The Ellembelle District Assembly in the Western Region has distributed assorted items to about 70 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the district to help them become more self-sufficient and improve their living standards.

The beneficiaries received items such as deep freezers, fufu-pounding machines, pepper-grinding machines, over-lock machines, sewing machines, hairdryers and some food items such as bags of rice, cartons of Milo and milk.

Making the presentation, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Kwasi Bonzoh, said the move was in fulfilment of the government’s responsibility to support PWDs in the country.

He said the government was determined to help alleviate poverty among people with disabilities and make life bearable for them, adding that the items were meant to empower the beneficiaries to use them to improve their livelihoods.

He appealed to the beneficiaries to ensure the items were used for the purposes for which they were presented and not to sell them. “We will not just give you the items but monitor how you would use them. We want to empower you to make a living to support yourselves and your caregivers so do not sell the items presented to you,” he told the beneficiaries.

He said about 200 applications were received but only 70 were selected because of inadequate resources.

The President of the Federation of PWDs in the district, George Mozoh, on behalf of his colleagues, thanked the assembly for its gesture and promised they would use the items to better their lives.

Besides, he expressed gratitude to the Akufo-Addo government for the continued support offered PWDs.
