Embarrassing, Despicable

The demolition of a structure on a parcel of land being contested by the Bulgarian Embassy and a private developer was a re-enactment of an earlier scenario with the Nigerian High Commission at the centre.

Of course the demolition was as embarrassing as it was despicable considering the fact that a diplomatic mission is in the eye of the storm.

A feeling of embarrassment is largely felt by the government which must by all means extricate itself from the entanglement.

Being a subject in the law courts as we have learnt, the implication of which is that work should have been temporarily ceased until the case is disposed of; it was contemptuous therefore that somebody would exhibit the level of impunity witnessed.

We are unsurprised that the NDC would seek to rope in government into the despicable act with a view to giving it a bad name and hanging it. With no proof in that regard, Samuel Ablakwa Okudzeto’s ranting and verbal charges against the President for not ordering the arrest of Dr. Adu Ampomah for, in his view, being behind the act of impunity and contempt is balderdash and a piece of cheap politicking consistent with the nature of the NDC.

Such partisan-powered insinuations do not give politics the deference it needs to ensure good governance.

If the suspect behind the act of contempt and crudeness belongs to government directly or indirectly, same would come to light by the time Justice Kwesi Anto Ofori-Atta completes his assignment.

Government’s tasking of the former High Court to probe the demolition is in order and the most sincere act yet to open up the chapter for all to see.

Intent on advancing the cause of the opposition NDC when the enquirer completes his work and submits the report and recommendations thereof, the NDC would still find faults with the process. That is their nature.

All we can say is that let the truth be told. We are in a country where opposition politics is all about lying, nowhere near advancing the cause of national interest.

At the end of the day, when the enquirer accomplishes his task, we would for instance be interested in establishing why those behind the demolition were able to do so without inhibition.

In future, we wish to have arrangements which would make it impossible for a repeat of this act of sheer bravado which goes nowhere but cause avoidable embarrassment and humiliation to government.

As government pointed out, the diplomatic community would    continue to be provided the necessary protection and ambience to discharge their functions. After all, diplomatic missions are covered by international conventions and our country is signatory to such statutes.
