Deputy Director General in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Francis Aboagye Nyarko, has said quality investigation is crucial in ensuring justice for victims and appropriate punishment for offenders.
He has urged all detectives to ensure that proper courtesy is given to victims and witnesses in their cases. He has therefore asked detectives to properly investigate their cases well in order to get conviction in court when they are presented.
He made this known at the closing ceremony of a seven-week detective training course organised for 85 detectives drawn from the Ghana Police Service, Prisons, Ghana Immigration Service, Personnel of Economic and Organised Crime, Ghana Revenue Authority and the Military Police at the Detective Training Academy in Accra.
Personnel were taken through courses such as criminal procedure, criminal law, crime scene management, customer care, information management, child friendly policing, criminal investigation, report writing, intelligence gathering and intellectual property rights, among others.
ACP Aboagye Nyarko said the course was targeted at building capacity of participants to combat crimes, especially the emerging ones like cyber and organised crimes.
He noted that criminal investigation agencies are facing many challenges in the investigation of traditional and modern crimes, adding that it was therefore prudent and wise that investigating agencies had to evolve ways to improve quality of investigations, especially for economic and organised crimes and their related legal issues.
The deputy director general of the CID urged personnel to uphold the reputation of their various institutions and be of good behaviour in the discharge of their duties.
In an address, the Commandant of the Detective Training Academy, Superintendent Benjamin Afissah, said due to the rise in piracy cases, the CID found it prudent to incorporate Intellectual Property Rights into the curriculum of the Academy.
He noted that personnel were also taken through Mobile Money Fraud and Financial Crime Investigations which were sponsored by MTN, Interpol and STAAC.
The commandant urged participants to apply the skills and knowledge acquired to help raise the image of their respective organizations.
Awards were given to deserving participants and the overall best student award was given to Detective Constable Richmond Obeng Nyarko. Dora Owusu Otimah took the best behaved student award, while Kweku Aboagye Amadi took the commandant’s special award.
