Dancehall superstar Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, was released on a GH¢5m revised bail yesterday, following his struggles to meet the initial GH¢10 million with two sureties to be justified terms set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The self-acclaimed ‘Dancehall King’ was detained on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in connection with investigations related to his purchase of a Lamborghini Urus which has been linked to $4 million crime by a Ghanaian, Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is serving jail time in the United States.

The interrogation, which dragged for about four hours inside EOCO’s Accra headquarters, focused on the artist’s yellow Lamborghini which was seized by EOCO as part of investigations.

Shatta Wale and his lawyers eventually met the revised terms, which include the artist reporting to EOCO three times a week, and was released from custody, sparing him another night in the custody of the anti-graft body.

On Thursday morning, tension had spilt onto the streets when news broke of Shatta Wale’s detention. Scores of fans gathered outside EOCO’s Accra headquarters, chanting, waving placards, and demanding the immediate release of the ‘I Know My Level’ singer.

The atmosphere was charged, with police officers on standby to control the crowd. A man dressed in traditionalist apparel was seen pouring libation at the EOCO premises, after which he broke the schnapps bottle on the floor.

EOCO, in a statement, disclosed that Shatta Wale has not been able to identify the person from whom he purchased the said Lamborghini Urus vehicle, except to say that he purchased it from the “Street.”

Shatta Wale is also reported to have told investigators that he purchased the luxury vehicle from someone possibly called ‘ZAK’ who may have contacted him on messaging platform WhatsApp.

However, the self-acclaimed ‘Dancehall King’ says he does not know the identity of the said ‘ZAK’ and he has since deleted his contact.

“Charles Nii Armah Mensah does not also possess any documentation in terms of receipt or transfer documents which shows that he owns or purchased the said vehicle, except a custom declaration document in his possession bearing the name of Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently in jail,” EOCO added.

EOCO had maintained that the artist would be released once the sureties are presented and surety inspection is completed successfully—a standard protocol in all bail conditions.

Shatta Wale’s manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah, popularly known as Sammy Flex, confirmed that the artist had reported to the EOCO voluntarily.

“He went there himself on Wednesday afternoon as a law-abiding citizen. This is not about money laundering—it is about clarifying tax responsibilities and the vehicle,” he explained in a video statement on X.

The invitation to Shatta Wale was fueled by him publicly claiming on August 5, 2025, that he purchased the car at a price of $150,000 from an unidentified party.

The meeting, which was initially scheduled for August 13, was rescheduled to August 20.

However, his lawyer indicated to EOCO that Shatta Wale was not available to attend on that day and that he (lawyer) was also busy. EOCO insisted they should report as scheduled.

Shatta Wale eventually went to EOCO on August 20 at about 3pm, with his lawyer arriving two hours later.

EOCO said despite the late arrival, its officers decided to conduct the interrogation which ended at 9pm.
