Families Of Newmont Accident Get Compensation

NEWMONT GHANA Gold Limited, Ahafo Mine, says it has implemented all recommendations from   the investigative report instituted by the Lands and Natural Resource Ministry and  has compensated all families of the disaster that occurred in April this year.

It would be recalled that six persons working with Consar Limited – a subsidiary of Newmont Ahafo Mill Expansion Project – lost their lives when the two-level formwork structure on which they were working collapsed and killed them on April 7, 2017.

As a result of the accident, the government, through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resource, set up a committee to investigate the cause of the accident and pay appropriate compensations to families of the victims.

This was revealed during a press soiree organised for journalists by the company in the Brong Ahafo Region on Friday.

Briefing the journalists on the activities of the company in 2018, the Communications and External Manager of Newmont, Agbeko Azuma, said long-term financial package for the upkeep of families of the deceased persons had been established to support the families.

Mr. Agbeko said in collaboration with the Minerals Commission, the company had paid some benefits to each of the families.

According to him, out of agitations from some youth of Kenyasi, the company has resolved to construct community roads and give support for the construction of a district hospital.

Going forward, the company has learnt its lessons from the accident and has resolved to ensure all employees and contractors of Newmont operate safely.
