Filling Station Robber Caged

An unemployed young man, who was captured on CCTV camera robbing an attendant at a filling station at Zongo Junction at Madina in Accra, has been remanded into custody by an Accra Circuit Court.

Abdul Manaf Saliru, 20, together with two other friends, one of whom has been identified as Shatta Wale and currently on the run, attacked the filling station attendant on August 12, 2018 at about 11:30 pm and robbed him of his daily sales of GH¢2,687.00 and mobile phone valued at GH¢600.

Saliru was arrested after the video was reviewed.

The accused, who was put before the court on one count of robbery, pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over a reliving judge, Afi Agbanu Kudormor, remanded him into police custody to reappear on September 20, 2018.

Inspector Samuel Ahiabor told the court that the complainant, Prince Kyei Amponsah, who is a fuel station attendant, was on duty on August 12, 2018 when the accused and his two colleagues attacked him and robbed him of his sales for the day and mobile phone.

He said the suspects were identified by witnesses, who reviewed the footage and reported the matter to the police.

“On August 28, 2018, the accused person was arrested at Sabon Zongo, but his accomplices escaped arrest. Upon the arrest of the accused person, he gave the name of one of his accomplices as Shatta Wale, who he shared the booty with,” Inspector Ahiabor told the court.

He said a jack knife was retrieved from the accused person’s room after a search and police investigation also revealed that the suspects attacked the victim in the generator room of the filling station.

The prosecutor added that efforts are being made to arrest the other suspects.
