One of the rooms in flames
A three-storey building at Manhyia South, near the Manhyia Government Hospital in Kumasi, was gutted by fire at about 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The incident reportedly caused panic among residents and passers-by, as thick smoke and flames engulfed parts of the building.
Preliminary reports suggested that the fire might have been caused by a gas explosion, although the exact cause had not been officially established as of press time.
An eyewitness told Opemsuo News that firefighters from the Asokore Mampong Fire Station were the first to arrive at the scene to battle the blaze.
The firefighters subsequently called for reinforcement from the KNUST Fire Station as they worked to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Speaking to Opemsuo News, ACFO Amos Abban disclosed that 11 out of the 44 bedrooms in the building were severely affected by the fire.
He, however, said no casualties were recorded in the incident.
ACFO Abban advised property owners to conduct periodic risk assessments of electrical wiring and cables in their buildings, noting that faulty or weakened electrical cables could trigger fire outbreaks.
He also urged the public not to interfere with firefighters during emergencies, stressing the need for residents and bystanders to give fire personnel enough space to operate effectively.
Investigations are expected to be conducted to establish the actual cause of the fire and assess the full extent of damage to the property.
