The Suspects
Four suspects are in the custody of the Ghana Police Service for their involvement in a series of armed robberies between April and October 2025, which targeted jewellery shops in the Greater Accra and Western Regions.
Following a critical analysis of the gang’s modus operandi and extensive intelligence gathering, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the CID Headquarters identified suspect Abdul Aziz Mamoud, also known as Justin Martin, an American national, as the mastermind who recruited and led the gang in carrying out the various operations.
The Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate (PAD) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, stated at a press conference that a number of these robbery attacks were captured by closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the affected shops.
“Police have so far linked the following robberies to the gang: On 26th April 2025, at approximately 9:30 AM, the gang attacked and robbed Rhyme Jewellery shop at Westlands, Accra, making away with assorted gold, silver, and diamond jewellery valued at about Two Million Ghana Cedis (GH₵2,000,000.00). The suspects used a hammer to smash the glass door of the shop before attacking the victims and stealing the items,” she stated.
Also, on 17th May 2025, between 10:45 AM and 11:00 AM, the gang, employing the same modus operandi, attacked a jewellery shop in Takoradi in the Western Region and stole eleven trays of gold jewellery valued at about Seventeen Million Ghana Cedis (GH₵17,000,000.00).
On 11th September 2025, the gang attacked a jewellery shop near Nyaho Clinic at Dzorwulu, Accra. Two armed men arrived on a motorbike, assaulted the shop attendant, broke the glass door, and made away with assorted jewellery valued at about One Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵1,800,000.00).
On 25th October 2025, the gang again attacked a jewellery shop at East Legon, Accra, and made away with assorted jewellery valued at about Two Million Ghana Cedis (GH₵2,000,000.00).
On 24th March 2026, following extensive intelligence gathering, a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of CID Headquarters arrested four suspects at Anyaa and Osu in the Greater Accra Region. The suspects are Abdul Aziz Mamoud alias Justin Martin, aged 40; Abubakar Mamoud, aged 28; Edgar Donkor, aged 33; and Donatus Donkor, aged 37.
DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi added that a search was conducted at the residences of suspects Abdul Aziz Mamoud and Abubakar Mamoud at Anyaa, which led to the recovery of items believed to have been used in the robberies, including a toy pistol, a hammer, two power motorbikes, a crash helmet, hand gloves, a hood, a face mask, shoes, empty jewellery casings, and a jacket.
“It is interesting to note that several of these items correspond to exhibits captured on CCTV footage from the scenes of the robberies,” she revealed.
A search at the residence of suspect Edgar Donkor led to the recovery of a gold tester, a diamond tester, a drone, and assorted jewellery.
DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi further mentioned that during interrogation, all suspects admitted to committing the various robberies in Accra and Takoradi. Suspect Abubakar Mamoud mentioned one person at Oyarifa (name withheld) as the receiver of stolen jewellery. Efforts are actively underway to locate and arrest the dishonest receiver to assist in the investigation.
“All four suspects are in Police custody and will be put before the court. The Ghana Police Service assures the public that we will continue to pursue all criminal networks engaged in organised robbery with the full force of the law,” she added.
