The Garden City University College (GCUC) has signed a formal agreement with the University of Calabar (UNICAL) in Nigeria to promote cooperation between the two institutions in training of health professionals in Africa.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) provides the platform for enhanced collaboration between the two universities and it seeks to explore cooperation on academic programmes, particularly midwifery.

The partnership will again enable the two institutions to expand on the African continent with mutual visits for the training and development of healthcare students.

Speaking after the formal signing ceremony, the GCUC founder, Albert Acquah said the partnership with UNICAL was a great opportunity for the two universities to work together to become world-class institutions for the training of midwives.

He was optimistic that the collaboration would open doors for youth employment and skills acquisition in both countries.

Mr. Acquah disclosed that GCUC would soon start the post graduate course in midwifery and was awaiting on its mentor university, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to give them the green light.

According to him, when approved, GCUC would become the first university in the country to offer a midwifery programme at the post graduate level.

“We have submitted all our documents and course contents and we have the human resource to handle the programme. What is left is the green light to start running the programme,” Mr Acquah noted.

He said the GCUC is the only private university in Ghana offering dental therapy, beside nursing, physician assistant, midwifery and medical laboratory technician programmes with certification from KNUST.
