Economist, Andrews Kwame Pianim has expressed concern over the country’s alarming rate of corruption cases recorded over the years.
According to him, although the country is blessed with resources, successive governments have not been able to utilize them to improve the livelihood of its people due to greed, indiscipline, and other corrupt related practices.
“As a result of these corrupt practices such as unfavorable contract signings which have affected the country’s economy is forcing the youth to cross the Mediterranean sea to seek greener pastures with mini boats which is extremely dangerous,” he lamented.
Mr. Pianim entreated the government, to as a matter of urgency, invest in improving entrepreneurship in the country which in the long run reduces the outrageous number of youth who ‘escape’ from the country to Europe.
“Funding Ghanaian entrepreneurship is the best solution we can use to mitigate cases of illegal migration to foreign countries for job acquisition. As leaders, there is a need to deliver the basic of things to the people and they intern will be happy” he said.
Mr. Pianim made these remarks at the 5th edition of the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) annual leadership lecture yesterday under the theme, “Re-imagining Ghana’s Development Trajectory for a Peaceful and Prosperous Nation by 2057.”
UPSA Vice Chancellor, Prof Okoe Amartey said the theme for the lecture has become pertinent for discussion considering the global challenges including the global pandemic and geo-political uncertainty.
He called on the leaders to devise means to stabilize the economy for the private sector to thrive and create the needed employment for the people.
