Rapper, Medikal, says the fact that no Ghanaian musician made it on the nomination list of 2021 edition of BET Awards is not an indication that they do ‘trash music.’
Speaking on Hitz FM on Monday, he explained that BET Awards has its own requirements for nomination, suggesting it goes beyond quality music.
The BET Awards is an American award show that was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. The awards are presented annually, and are broadcast live on BET.
Its International Act Category is dedicated to honouring outstanding achievements of international artistes from around the world every year. The category included African artistes.
This year’s nominations were released on Thursday and Nigeria’s top musicians Burna Boy and Wizkid made the list as well as Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz.
Other acts from France, UK and Brazil are also captured in the category but no Ghanaian made it.
As a result, the current crop of Ghanaian musicians were over the weekend heavily criticised for their inability to get nomination for the award.
But Medikal in his response suggested that Ghanaians should take it cool on its musicians.
“Ghanaians shouldn’t think that because no Ghanaian artiste didn’t get nomination for BET Awards means the music we do is trash or the music doesn’t go anywhere.
“I don’t think anything went wrong. They (BET) put up their nominations and know where to put what. If they didn’t nominate any Ghanaian, it doesn’t mean the musicians here are making trash music,” he indicated.
