Ghanaian rap icon M.anifest has expressed concern over the lack of recognition and support for Asakaa drill sensation O’Kenneth, despite his impressive run this year.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the ‘No More Sleep’ hitmaker called on music stakeholders and fans to create an enabling environment for the young star, stressing that his talent deserves more attention.
“Most of y’all sleeping on the type of year O’Kenneth is having. He rarely speaks but the work rate is loud,” M.anifest wrote.
O’Kenneth, born Kenneth Opoku, is one of the pioneering faces of Ghanaian drill music, popularly known as Asakaa, which emerged from Kumasi.
He shot to national prominence in 2020 as part of the Asakaa Boys collective with breakout anthems like ‘Agyei’, ‘Sore’ remix featuring British rapper Stormzy, and ‘Lonely Road’. Known for his distinct melodic flow, blending Twi and English over heavy 808 drill beats, he has carved a unique lane for himself.
Though relatively low-key and rarely in the news for controversies, O’Kenneth has maintained a consistent work rate with projects such as ‘Until One Day’ and ‘Pain In Glory’, collaborations with Reggie, Jay Bahd, Kwaku DMC, and City Boy, and a growing international audience.
M.anifest’s comment adds to growing calls for the industry to give more structural support to the Kumasi drill movement which has become one of Ghana’s biggest music exports in recent years.
