GhIPSS, Archie Hesse Honoured At GITTA

Vice-President Dr Bawumia congratulates Mr Archie Hesse

CHIEF EXECUTIVE Officer (CEO) of Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), Archie Hesse, is the Payment Industry Personality of the Year, while GhIPSS was also awarded for the successful implementation of Mobile Money Interoperability.

Both Mr Hesse and GhIPSS were honoured during the 9th edition of the prestigious Ghana Information Technology & Telecom Awards (GITTA) held in Accra on the 28th of June, this year.

This is the second time in a week that the CEO of GhIPSS has received an award in relation to the promotion of payment systems. He was adjudged the Man of the Year- Technology at the 4th EMY awards held on the 22nd of June.

Mr. Hesse joined GhIPSS as General Manager in charge of Projects and Business Development at the early stages of GhIPSS and was subsequently promoted to become the CEO. He has since championed a number of projects at GhIPSS that have significantly changed the payment landscape and improved the number of electronic payments channels in the country.

Last year, Mr. Hesse led GhIPSS to implement both phase I and II of Mobile Money Interoperability in a manner that is the envy of many countries.

The successful implementation of the Mobile Money Interoperability earned GhIPSS itself a special recognition award at the GITTA event.  Since its implementation in May last year, over 4.4 million cross network transactions have been undertaken.

In an interview, Mr. Hesse noted that the recognition given him and the company was humbling. He said “it is good to note that others are watching what we do and are appreciative of our efforts to change the payment landscape.” He said GhIPSS would continue to work tirelessly to achieve its mandate.

GhIPSS, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bank of Ghana since 2007, has introduced a number of electronic payment channels. They include e-Zwich, electronic clearing of cheques, Automated Clearing House–Direct Credit and Direct Debit. The rest are gh-link and GhIPSS Instant Pay. A few more are expected to be introduced before the end of the year.

GITTA recognises not only the products and diverse innovations that keep the ICT & Telecom sector thriving, but also the companies and people who make the industry great. It is open to all players and stakeholders in the ICT ecosystem.

GITTA is considered the most celebrated ICT awards attracting the crème de la crème and top decision-makers in the sector. It is organised in partnership with the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications.
