The students of the Ghana International School (GIS) marked the United Nations (UN) and National Costume Day with impressive performances to highlight the power of positive influence.
The annual event brings together children, parents and staff of the school from different backgrounds to celebrate diversity through various presentations.
This year’s programme was themed, “Influencing Your World; It Starts With You.’
The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Iain Walker and Italian High Commissioner to Ghana, Giovanni Favilli, graced the occasion and witnessed speeches, music, poetry and choreography by the students from various countries.
Dr. Mary Ashun, Principal of GIS, in her welcome address, said more and more, the benefits of good leadership are being felt in Ghana and around the world.
“While we use this day to celebrate our diversity, our unity is on display for everyone to see as we seek to highlight our school motto; Understanding of Each Other,” she said.
Dr. Ashun said through the celebration of the day, students are given the opportunity to build awareness of the UN goals for Sustainable Development and participate in several activities in and out of school.
“Experience has shown us that our students are capable of so much ingenuity and as we work in partnership with parents and other stakeholders, we will use this platform for positive influence,” she added.
Mr Iain Walker, the special guest, in an address, urged them to be the change the world needs to be a better place.
He said when young people begin to do the little things that bring positive influence to society, there will be real progress.
“Yes you need to make a change and it starts with you doing the little things that matter first and take chances,” he said.
The school later hosted the students, parents and special guests during an international food fair to sample the different dishes from countries across the continents of the world.
