Solomon Kotei
The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has called on government to create the enabling economic environment to help improve the wellbeing of Ghanaians.
According to the General Secretary of the union, Solomon Kotei, Ghanaian workers are expecting in improvement in their lives in 2018.
Speaking to Citi Business News, Mr Kotei said it is time for the good economic figures to translate into cash in the pockets of Ghanaians.
“The economy is not what Ghanaians are told on paper. It is what reflects in the ordinary man’s life on the streets. As of now, we haven’t seen any bright changes in terms of bread and butter issues,” he said.
Mr. Kotei was of the view that it is good to have positive economic figures, but it will be fruitless if it does not reflect in the economic improvement of the citizens.
Inflation can continue to go down, and government must work to further bring it down, but it must reflect in the rate at which prices increase on the market.
Govt promises in 2018 budget
Government, in its 2018 budget, promised to ensure that ordinary Ghanaians and businesses experience growth with the introduction of specific policy initiatives.
Some of these initiatives include the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ programme, abolishment of duties on some agricultural produce processing equipment and machinery, establishment of a GH¢400 million fund to the agriculture and agribusiness sector through sustainable agriculture financing and crop insurance schemes.
