The government has committed an additional GH¢4.1 billion to fully implement the Free Senior High School (SHS) initiative, as part of its 2025 budget allocations.
Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, revealed the allocation during his presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament today.
Dr. Forson confirmed that the government is uncapping the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to ensure adequate financing for the Free SHS programme.
This move, he explained, is aimed at providing dedicated funds for the full implementation of the initiative, which has been a cornerstone of the country’s educational policy.
In addition to this significant investment in education, Dr. Forson also outlined the government’s broader focus on economic transformation through the Big Push Programme, which has been allocated GH¢13.85 billion.
This programme aims to fund large-scale infrastructure projects that will improve transportation, energy access, and other critical sectors, driving long-term economic growth.
“The Big Push Programme will lay the foundation for long-term economic growth, while our investments in education ensure that future generations are better prepared for success,” Dr. Forson stated.
