The Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 took delivery of 105 Toyota Camry and Corolla cars procured by the government.
They are part of a total of 200 cars the Akufo-Addo administration has secured to retool the police service, which has over the years been facing logistical challenges.
Deputy Minister of Information, Nana Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, who was in the company of journalists, made the presentation to the police service on behalf of government.
She said the state thought it wise to equip the police to prudently combat sophisticated crimes.
Nana Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, who presented the 105 cars at the Police Headquarters in Accra, said the remaining 95 cars would be cleared from the Tema Port that same day.
She indicated that the government secured the vehicles to enable the Ghana Police Service to deliver on its mandate of providing internal security.
The deputy minister recounted that earlier in the year the government also donated a total of 108 Nissan pickups to the Police Service for Operation Cowleg, adding that 114 high-powered motorbikes were also given to the Police Service for patrol.
She said a meeting between the government, Police Service and other stakeholders revealed that the service was severely facing infrastructure deficits.
She said President Akufo-Addo deemed it fit to assist the Police with the necessary resources to effectively carry out their duties.
The Deputy Minister explained that government intends to make the Ghana Police a world-class institution.
Director-General of Public Affairs Directorate of the Police Service, David Eklu, who received the vehicles, said “the intervention is a major step in the right direction. This is just the beginning of good things to come; we are grateful for the support from government.”
