Ex-Ghana striker Kim Grant has labeled as ‘nonsense’ hefty bonuses given to Black Stars players as winning bonuses despite a recent 20% reduction.
The issue of bonuses draws criticism for the players of the national team who have been accused of being unpatriotic.
The leadership of the team has unanimously agreed to a 20% reduction amid several criticisms.
But former Ghana striker, Kim Grant, who played for the Black Stars in the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, has joined the crusade to have the bonuses slashed further.
“I think wearing the national jersey to play is enough motivation. It is a big privilege. So I don’t know why they were being given such huge money only to play for the national team,” he told Starr FM.
“These players receive huge monies at their respective clubs and I don’t know why Ghana will be paying them winning bonuses of such amount.”
“To me I think giving them these huge sums of money to play for the national team is “nonsense”. That is my opinion and that is what I think.”
Remuneration for the Black Stars players came under scrutiny after the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil where players demanded being paid their appearance fees before their final group match against Portugal.
Past ministers adopted a take-it-or-leave-it approach and that did yield any dividends.
