THE DAMAGED towers of GRIDCo which caused the recent intermittent power cuts in the Ashanti Region, have been repaired.
A team of top technicians had to work day and night to repair the three pylons.
As a result of the repairs, the collapsed 330kV Aboadze-Kumasi Transmission Lines at Bogoso, which supply power to the Ashanti Region are now functioning thereby stabilizing the electricity situation in the region.
The worrying power cuts in Kumasi have since the repairs in the past two days become a thing of the past.
If the trend continues both GRIDCo and ECG will be commended for a job well done.
It would be recalled that the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’, recently visited Kumasi with ECG, GRIDCo and VRA top officials.
The minister, during the visit, announced that the GRIDCo damaged pylons were being repaired so power supply would be stable in Kumasi soon.
The Minister also led the team to visit the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace, where the Asantehene expressed anger with Ghana Gas for its purported role in the incessant power cuts in the Ashanti Region.
The Otumfuo, had said he was privy to information that Ghana Gas was not giving enough gas to fuel generating companies to produce the required energy for the region in particular.
He therefore, vowed to lead a team of powerful Asante chiefs to the Jubilee House in Accra to officially complain to the President if Ghana Gas did not reverse the supply trend.
“The head of Ghana Gas, tell him that I said if he refuses to adhere to my advice to him to work and ensure free flow of gas, then I will lead a team of powerful Asante chiefs to the presidency and complain,” Otumfuo had threatened.
The Asantehene also tasked GRIDCo to quickly tackle the damaged transmission towers so that Ashanti Region would leave the era of power cuts “which have destroyed all the electronic devices in my house recently,” adding that “my only interest is to see the power plant in Kumasi and producing power so Napo work on that for me.”
Ghana Gas later offered to explain itself saying it could not be held entirely responsible for the power outages in the Ashanti Region and its environs.
It said it was a GRIDCo transmission line which got damaged in the Western Region by a fallen mast belonging to a telecoms company.
Ghana Gas Company and the VRA have had their own challenges in recent times, a situation which temporarily affected their operations.
Following the restoration of stable power supply, scores of residents of Kumasi have praised Napo for his quick response and hard work.
In a related development Daily Guide has learnt that despite the repair of the damaged pylons, the region still faces challenges in power supply because Ghana Gas is unable to supply sufficient gas to power the plants.
