Hunters Burn Crops In Salaga

A farmer lamenting over his loss

Some people from Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, have reportedly destroyed crops worth thousands of Ghana cedis, in the course of hunting at Masaka, a farming community in the Kalande Electoral Area, Salaga.

Information gathered indicates that the fire suddenly became uncontrollable, spreading into nearby farms and destroying large hectors of yam, cashew and cowpea.

During dry seasons, hunting is a common activity in the Northern Region. The hunters set fires in the bushes so as to trap the animals for them to kill.

Some of the affected farmers who spoke to DAILY GUIDE said they had lost their livelihoods as a result of the bushfire.

Timothy, one of them, revealed that he had lost 500 tubers and over 2,000 yam seeds to the fire.

Another farmer, Yaw Zaabu, claimed he also lost an unspecified quantity of yam seeds, cowpeas and cashews.

Meanwhile, farmers in the area have sent a warning to people who come to their community on hunting expedition to desist from the practice else they would be severely dealt with.

The assemblyman of Kalande Electoral Area, Sunkwa Victor, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the incident had been reported to the MCE. He added that any attempt to hunt in the area would vigorously be resisted by the community.

He called on the government to provide the community with warehouses to store their farm produce after harvesting.
