‘I Called Off My Wedding Because Of Domestic Violence’

Ngozi Nwosu

Veteran Nollywood actress, Ngozi Nwosu, has disclosed that she cancelled her wedding a day before it was meant to happen after enduring repeated domestic abuse from her former partner.

Speaking on Real Life with Aunty Ayo Adesanya, the screen legend recounted harrowing details of the violence she suffered — including a disturbing incident where her partner dragged her by the hair until she bled.

“My husband was a violent person,” Nwosu said. “I remember one day he broke the kitchen door while I was boiling water, dragged me by my hair, and I started bleeding. That’s a day I’ll never forget.”

She explained that despite intense pressure from her family and fiancé to go ahead with the ceremony, she refused to sign the marriage papers — choosing her safety over societal expectations.

“It was not an easy decision, but I had had enough. Marriage is not a do-or-die affair,” she said. “When domestic violence becomes too much, it’s best to walk away. If you accept it once, be ready to keep accepting it for the rest of your life.”

The Fuji House of Commotion actress revealed that at one point she even picked up a pestle to defend herself, saying she was “ready to go to jail” to protect her life. “My neighbours even saw me naked,” she recalled.

Ngozi Nwosu urged women not to remain in abusive relationships out of fear or shame, warning that abusers rarely change. “Don’t stay with a man who beats you and apologises later. Once it happens, it will happen again,” she cautioned.
