I Miss Radio Drama – Fred Amugi

Fred Amugi

Veteran Ghanaian actor, Fred Amugi, has called for the return of radio drama in Ghana, saying he deeply misses a medium that once educated, entertained and brought communities together.

Speaking in an interview on Nana Yaa Agyare’s Sunshine programme on CTV, Fred described radio drama as a powerful cultural tool that shaped generations before television became widespread.

According to him, from the 1950s through the 1980s and 1990s, radio was the heartbeat of storytelling in Ghana. These dramas addressed everyday social issues and were performed in both English and local languages, making them accessible to people in both urban and rural communities.

Amugi stressed that radio drama is not outdated, describing it as one of the most inclusive and cost-effective storytelling platforms available.

He argued that reviving radio drama would help preserve Ghanaian languages, folklore, values and oral traditions, while still engaging modern audiences.

Using the platform, the seasoned actor urged broadcasters, producers, cultural institutions and policymakers to re-invest in radio drama, adapting it to contemporary themes without losing its strong storytelling roots.
