I Was In Ghana On My Birthday – Napo

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who is popularly known as Napo, has clarified media reports concerning the celebration of his 55th birthday.

In a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Kofi Abrefa Afena, the Minister said he did not celebrate his birthday in Monaco as reported but rather travelled on a KLM flight to Athens in Greece for a brief holiday, a day after marking his birthday.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh insisted that the earlier publication was thus factually inaccurate.

According to him, he took permission from the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President to visit Athens in Greece for holiday, a day after his birthday, noting that he travelled on a commercial flight, KLM and not the private jet as earlier reported.

Dr. Prempeh maintains that the report was malicious and contrived because he celebrated his birthday in the country, contrary to the publication’s content.

The statement said the minister celebrated his birthday in Ghana, attending meetings of the Economic Management Team (EMT) and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) board.

“On 24th May, the day after Dr. Prempeh’s birthday, the Communications Team were in his house in the morning, at his instance, where he recorded an appreciation message to his well-wishers for the love shown to him on his birthday.

“He spent the rest of the day of the 24th in his office, where he carried out his routine official duties,” the statement noted.

It added, “Dr. Prempeh after seeking the necessary approval from the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, travelled abroad on KLM to Athens for a brief holiday.”

The statement claimed that “there is incontrovertible evidence in this regard. The above sequence of events is verifiable.”

“Anybody who knows Dr. Prempeh very well will corroborate the fact that, he does not attach hype and razzmatazz to his birthdays, except, on those days, as an avid Christian, to be alone in sobriety and to thank the Almighty God for his grace and mercies,” the statement added.
