Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured Members of Parliament (MPs) on the party’s side that he will not support any attempt to remove MPs who failed to back his bid during the party’s presidential primaries.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day workshop organised for the Minority Caucus in Accra, Dr. Bawumia called for unity within the NPP and urged party members to put the collective interest of the party above individual ambitions as preparations begin towards the 2028 general election.
“We have finished the presidential primaries and therefore, as I have been saying and as I will continue to say and do, I don’t see any factions amongst us. I only see the NPP,” he stated.
The former Vice President dismissed suggestions of divisions within the party based on support for various presidential aspirants, insisting that the NPP must move forward as one united political family.
“I don’t see a Kennedy Agyapong faction. I don’t see a Bryan Acheampong faction. I don’t see an Adutwum faction. We are all one together,” he told the MPs.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come amid concerns in some quarters of the party over possible political reprisals against MPs and party executives who supported rival candidates during the NPP’s internal presidential contest.
Seeking to calm such fears, he stressed that he would never use his position as flagbearer to target any MP for removal because of political differences during the primaries.
“I want to promise you that I will not be in any situation where I’m going to push for the removal of any MP because they didn’t support me. I’ll never do that. I’ll not do that, and nobody should do that in my name,” he declared.
The NPP flagbearer emphasised that unity remained the party’s greatest strength, and warned against allowing personal interests to overshadow the broader ambition of recapturing political power in 2028.
“We are all politicians, we all have interests and ambitions, but none of us should allow his or her personal interest to override the collective ambition of our party,” he said.
According to him, the shared objective of the party should be to promote the NPP, support its parliamentary candidates and secure victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
“Our collective ambition is to promote the nation and our party, promote my candidacy, and promote our parliamentary candidates, so that we can win the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2028,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia further appealed to party members to become “each other’s keeper” and work together to strengthen the NPP’s position as the main alternative to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
He also assured the Minority Caucus of his continuous support, indicating that his engagement with them would go beyond ceremonial appearances.
“I will be available to engage, to listen, to assist with policy direction, to support messaging and to stand with you when the work becomes difficult,” he assured the caucus.
The former Vice President told the MPs that they should not feel isolated in their parliamentary responsibilities, stressing that the leadership of the party remained committed to supporting them in shaping policy alternatives and communicating the NPP’s vision to Ghanaians.
