IGP Lawyer Blasts Atta Akyea Over Leaked Tape Probe

Kwame Gyan

Lead Counsel for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo-Dampare, Lawyer Kwame Gyan has jabbed the chairperson of a 7-Member Parliament Ad-hoc Committee, Samuel Atta-Akyea, by accusing him of being biased regarding the investigation over the controversial leaked audio.

According to Lawyer Kwame Gyan, the conduct of Mr. Atta-Akyea is prejudicial and could compromise the integrity of the investigation, adding that Mr. Atta-Akyea is operating as if he were a sole commissioner overseeing the investigation.

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, who is also the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee probing the leaked audio, Samuel Atta Akyea, has disclosed that the viral leaked tape on Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare’s removal appears to be doctored.

According to him, the tape which has been circulating on social media, is a shorter version than the new tape delivered to the committee by the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu.

“It seems to be the case, because the second tape is a long conversation,” Atta Akyea said.

The IGP Dampare before the Committee dismissed allegations made against him by the Police Officers stating that those wild allegations caused his family severe pain, adding that the allegations that he was part of a conspiracy to secretly record conversations of the three implicated police officers were unfounded.

Speaking on Joy News, in reaction to Atta Akyea’s comment, the IGP’s Lawyer, expressed his team’s reluctance to accept such a situation going forward, adding that “Atta Akyea has his own agenda because he has revealed his biased intentions for all to see’’.

He explained that Mr. Atta-Akyea granted media interviews after committee meetings with detrimental comments by disclosing matters that he reserved for in-camera hearing and fabricating stories without basis.

“He will be granting media interviews to the extent that after one sitting, he went out there and said the extended tape which was submitted by Bugri Naabu, and had not been played at the committee, has been doctored. Very prejudicial comments” Kwame Gyan added.

The Lawyer further explained “Because of respect for Parliament and the institution and persons on the Committee, I drop my guns, but I’m going to do what lawyers do, going forward’’.

He indicated he was going to hold the chairman to the remit of the committee as set up by the Speaker of Parliament to ensure that the purpose for which the committee was set up is achieved and nothing more.

The viral leaked tape on IGP Dampare has been the subject of much discussion and debate. Bugri Naabu had earlier confirmed to the committee that the tape was authentic.

The leaked tape contains a conversation between Bugri Naabu and three senior Police Officers – COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, allegedly plotting the removal of the IGP to help the NPP rig the 2024 elections.
