It’s Normal To Be Detained In Police Cells – Dr. UN

Kwame Owusu Fordjuor, aka Dr. UN, has described as normal his recent arrest and subsequent detainment in a Kumasi police cell for weeks.

“It is normal, anyone can go behind bars,” he told Angel TV on Friday, suggesting his case is not a big deal to him.

Dr. UN was arrested on Friday, October 16, 2020 at the premises of Kumasi-based radio station, Hello FM by the police after an interview, for reportedly flouting bail conditions.

He was previously standing trial at a court in Asokore Mampong for defrauding by false pretences from four different complainants. He didn’t show up in court, which caused his re-arrest.

But early November 2020, the Asokore Mampong district court, presided over by Her Ladyship Portia Molly Sally, granted Dr. UN bail and ordered a medical examination of his mental state.

According to the trial judge, an accused person’s mental fitness was a necessity to a fair trial, and that it was important for Dr. UN to have the mental capacity to understand and appreciate the court proceedings. Dr. UN was granted bail at an amount of GH¢15,000 with two sureties to be justified.

Recounting why he was arrested, he said two years ago, he organised a show in Kumasi and there was an issue and it became police case which went to court. However, he missed out on going to court because he was sick.

“I have said I had a kidney problem and I was admitted at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for about a month and I couldn’t make it to court. I didn’t report to the court because my handlers didn’t tell me,” he revealed.

Dr. UN became very popular in Ghana after organising an award ceremony dubbed 7th Global Leadership Service to Humanity Awards.

Among persons honoured at the event were D-Black, Sarkodie, Chairman Wontumi and media personality Nathaniel Attoh.

The purpose of honouring them was their tremendous role in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But the award became controversial after he allegedly mentioned that the United Nations was part of the organisation. And that was how he ended up with the name Dr. UN.

According to him, the 2021 edition of the award will come off in the UK and he will also award whoever wins 2020 Ghana presidential election.
