The International Young Democrat Union (IYDU), a global alliance of centre-right political youth organizations, together with the Deputy Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku Constituency, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, has presented some personal protective equipment (PPE) and other assorted items to two orphanages at Teshie in Accra.

The orphanages are Teshie Orphanage and the Assurance of Hope for the Needy Orphanage, both in the Ledzokuku Constituency.

The items included face masks, hand sanitizers, liquid soaps, Veronica buckets, and mosquito nets. Others are food items, such as assorted soft drinks, biscuits, toiletries, among others.

Led by the Deputy National Youth Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Perpetual Lomokie Akwada, and the IYDU Administrator of the Ghana Chapter, David Nkansah Anto, the group said the decision to go to the aid of the vulnerable was aimed at helping them to be able to fight the unfortunate global pandemic that has plagued the world.

“We may be fortunate to be living with our parents, but these ones are not. That is why we all need to come and support them, and it is the reason why we decided to come to their aid,” Ms. Akwada told the media.

“For us in the various centre-right political movements across the globe, we believe that we should always put people first. And if you have noticed, all over the world, policies of centre-right political parties are directly tailored towards the development of the human being and that is exactly why we came,” Ms. Akwada added.

Education

Dr. Okoe-Boye took the opportunity to educate the orphans and staff of the orphanages on ways in which they can protect themselves from the novel coronavirus disease. He stated that while the government is doing its part to protect the whole country and people living in it, individuals also have a responsibility to protect themselves. He advised staff of the orphanages to ensure adequate protection to, especially the young ones, who cannot protect themselves.

IYDU

The International Young Democrat Union (IYDU) is a global alliance of centre-right political youth organizations united by a common desire for greater freedom and less government. First established in 1981, two years before its parent organisation the International Democrat Union (IDU), and re-established in 1991, the IYDU has grown from 14 members to over 120, from more than 81 different nations.

In Ghana, the NPP is a member of the mother union IDU, with the party’s youth wing being a member of the IYDU.

In November 2018, NPP National Youth Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, aka Nana B, was elected Vice Chairman of the IYDU at the Union’s Annual Council Meeting which took place in Helsinki, Finland.
