Juaben MCE Nominee Hot Over ‘Bribe Payment’

Alex Sarfo Kantanka

The Ashanti Regional Police Command have arrested Alex Sarfo Kantanka, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for the Juaben municipal assembly over alleged bribery of Assembly Members to confirm him.

His arrest follows a viral video of him demanding a refund of alleged bribe money he paid to assembly members who failed to endorse his confirmation.

According to a statement released by the Ghana Police Service and signed by Superintendent Alexander Kweku Obeng, Police Director of Public Affairs the nominee was subsequently granted bail after interrogation and caution statement obtained.

The police spokesman intimated that the police have also commenced investigations into the alleged bribe payments to ascertain the truth of the matter.

He assured the public that the police will continue to deal with anyone who breaks the law.

Nominee of the President for the Juaben Municipal Assembly, was rejected by assembly members for the second time, not even after the intervention of the Omanhene of the area.

Aggrieved Alex Sarfo was captured in a secretly filmed video, demanding a refund of the bribe he allegedly paid to some assembly members after they rejected him during a nearly chaotic confirmation process.

He was further seen hurling insults and curses on particular people suspected to be assembly members for collecting money from him but refused to confirm him as the MCE.

Alex Sarfo was also captured furiously asking everyone who received money from him “to be ready to return his money urgently”.

The nominee failed to secure the two-thirds majority after he obtained only six votes out of the 26 votes cast in the first attempt.

Alex Sarfo was reappointed by the President, but some assembly members boycotted the second exercise to confirm him, succeeding in securing just 10 votes, not enough to win him the position.
