Gabriel Kofi Anane, the Manhyia South Constituency NPP Chairman, dancing with some members of the party on Saturday
There was a spontaneous jubilation at Manhyia South Constituency, Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted a peaceful constituency polls in the area on Saturday.
The supporters of the ruling political party in the constituency could not contain their joy after winners of the elections were announced at the election venue.
Some of the party supporters who spoke to DAILY GUIDE said they were very happy because some ‘selfish’ party members in the constituency had tried in vain to stop the elections and claimed it was designed to give the party a bad name.
They therefore commended the Ashanti Regional NPP leadership for being ‘proactive’ by sending some of the most respected party people in the region, Dr. Oheneba Danso and Dr. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah,  to conduct the elections.
Injunction Rumour
Prior to the polls, there were reports that one, Richard Owusu, a former second vice chairman of the party at Manhyia South Constituency, had secured an injunction to put the process on hold.
Mr. Owusu, according to reports, could not take part in the vetting of the aspirants at Manhyia South because he had been suspended by the party for close to one-year for gross misconduct.
A party document which DAILY GUIDE sighted, indicates that Mr. Owusu, was suspended after he, allegedly, led some National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth to extort money from some lorry station operators.
It further said, Mr. Owusu’s weird action, which happened right after the 2016 elections results was declared, had dented the image of the NPP so he (Owusu) was not fit to parade himself as an executive of the party.
Election Results
When the results were declared, Ibrahim Hamidu, had 304 votes to retain the first vice chairman seat; Seth Twumasi, secured 358 votes to take the second vice position and Haruna Alhassan, secured 302 votes to retain the secretary position.
Joe Dofour Junior, polled 250 votes to take the youth organizer position; Bashiru Issaka, secured 309 to take the NASARA Coordinator position and Kofi Amoah Asamoah, polled 262 to become the treasurer of the party.
Oscar Boah had 283 votes to take the assistant secretary position, but there was a tie in the women organizer position race where the two main contestants, Mary Coker and Helena Pinamang, polled 199 votes each.
Gabriel Kofi Anane, the incumbent NPP Chairman in Manhyia South Constituency and Alhaji Abubakar Alhassan, the Organizer, retained their seats as nobody contested them.
In total, 441 delegates of the party in the constituency, which represents about 90 percent of the total votes, were there to cast their ballot in an election which was described as free and fair.
Later, Education Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately called ‘Napo’ who is the MP for the area admonished the newly elected executives to be fair to all the party members in the constituency and urged them to eschew backbiting.
He commended the delegates and aspirants for showing maturity on the voting day, urging them to continue to work hard for the NPP’s victory in the next election.
