KATH Trains Fertility Doctors

THE KOMFO Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has successfully completed training four fertility specialists.

These doctors received their training in South Africa, Australia, United Kingdom (UK) and Ghana, respectively, it has been announced.

The training of these doctors is in anticipation of the opening of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre at KATH.

Valued at GH¢2.2 million, the ART Centre would provide top-level specialist fertility service to the public, starting this year.

KATH CEO, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, stated that KATH solely funded the ART Centre with its internationally generated funds (IGF).

According to him, everything was set for the completion of the modern ART Centre latest by the first quarter of 2021 in order to start operations.

Speaking at the recently held KATH annual Thanksgiving Service and Staff Reception, he said 2021 would be an eventful year for KATH.

“In the scheme of the board and management, 2021 is expected to be an exciting and eventful year as far as the upgrading of the hospital’s specialist services are concerned.”

He said “heavy investments have been planned by the hospital and its partners to introduce specialists’ facilities and services on a scale yet to be witnessed in the history of the hospital.”

Mr. Owusu-Danso stated that among the facilities that would commence specialists operations at KATH this year would be the GH¢2.2 million worth ART Centre.

The KATH CEO also said plans were in the pipeline to open a million dollar Laparoscopy Centre at KATH by the middle of 2021 to boost surgical services.

“The Laparoscopy Centre will facilitate the provision of pinhole or minimally invasive surgical services and help greatly to improve surgical outcomes.

“The Korean Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) is assisting the hospital with funds for the procurement of specialized equipment and instruments.”

KOFIH, he added, “is also assisting with the training of surgeons, nurses and allied staff in South Korea in readiness for the take-off of the Laparoscopy Centre.”
