KBTH Paediatric Unit Takes Shape

TheĀ  Paediatric unit under construction

The construction of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) by the Rebecca Foundation is progressing steadily.

The latest project, which was launched three months ago by First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has already reached an appreciable level, with the contractors and artisans working around the clock to meet the deadline in the next three months.

Expressing her satisfaction at the progress of work on the project on social media, the first lady said, ā€œWork is progressing steadily on the latest health project being undertaken by the Rebecca Foundation at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH)

ā€œIā€™m excited about the progress of work on our latest project; the contractors and artisans are working make sure we deliver right on time to give our precious kids quality health care. Thanks to everyone for the immense support. Together we will make a difference,ā€ she stated.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of a one-storey PICU at the KBTH in May this year.

Sponsored by the Rebecca Foundation, of which the first lady is the executive director, the building would admit 41 children at a time when completed.

The unit will have six different admission suits, five beds in the main paediatric intensive care room, one bed at the paediatric ICU isolation room, 14 beds for the paediatric high dependency ward, 10 for the neonatal ICU ward, seven for the neonatal high dependency ward and four in the neonatal isolation ward.

The admitted children and neonates up to 12 years will use specially built-for-purpose beds, cribs, cots and incubators and will be supported by a full set of medical equipment for pediatric health care.

The new facility will apply the same green technology used in the Komfo Anokye Mother & Baby and Paediatric Intensive Care Units, which will make the building extremely energy efficient.
