KMA Bares Teeth

THE KUMASI Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has stressed that its by-laws frown against shop owners in the city who keep waste in front of their shops till KMA staff come to clean them.

In this regard, the assembly has warned that any shop owner that would store waste in front of their shop would be apprehended and prosecuted in court in line with the KMA by-laws.

The Kumasi Mayor observed with concern about how some shop owners, especially, in Adum, the Central Business Center (CBD) of Kumasi, intentionally pile waste in front of their shops.

According to him, such weird acts by some of the shop owners in the metropolis, have the tendency to dent Kumasi, the capital city of Ashanti Region’s good image.

Mr Osei Assibey was speaking to the media when the Kumasi Youth Association (KUYA), a youth association in Asanteman, presented quantities of exercise books, embossed with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s image to the KMA.

The exercise books are supposed to be distributed to the various schools in the city by the KMA to help boost academic work in the Kumasi Metropolis.

He said the shameful behaviour by these shop owners aside denting Kumasi’s image, could also lead to the spread of preventable diseases.

He, therefore, admonished residents of the city to stop throwing waste at unapproved places indicating that the collective efforts of all and sundry is crucially needed to make Kumasi reclaim its past glory.

Mr Osei Assibey said it is the vision of his administration to restore Kumasi to its lost ‘Garden City’ status, adding that KMA intends introducing a policy dubbed ‘Operation Keep Kumasi Clean and Green’ soon.

According to him, the ‘Operation Keep Kumasi Clean and Green’ programme, would initiate tree planting at vantage parts of Kumasi to make the city look sublime.
