Kofi Annan Funeral Committee Unveiled

President Akufo-Addo yesterday inaugurated a nine-member committee to plan the funeral of the former United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Kofi Annan.

The state funeral for the late Kofi Annan would be held on Thursday, September 13, 2018 in Accra.

A statement from the presidency, which was signed by Director of Communications, said the committee would be chaired by distinguished diplomat and former secretary to the Cabinet of President John Agyekum Kufuor, Ambassador Annan A. Cato.

The committee was constituted in consultation with the widow, Nane Maria Annan, children and family members.

Other members of the committee include Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister-designate for Information, Ambassador Mercy Debrah Karikari, Secretary to Cabinet, Ambassador Ahmed Hassan, Director of State Protocol and Samuel Kumah, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The rest are Brigadier-General Charles Awity, Director-General of Personnel Administration of the Ghana Armed Forces, Ambassador Patrick Hayford, retired UN official and Kojo Annan, son of the late Kofi Annan.

Nana Mensah, Director of Protocol at the Office of the Vice President, would serve as Secretary to the Organising Committee.

The late diplomat died in Switzerland on August 18, 2018.

President Akufo-Addo took the decision to honour Mr Annan with a state funeral after his family called on him at the Jubilee House on Friday, August 24, 2018 to formally announce the death.
