Kpandai Election Rerun: EC Decision Premature – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President and flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has described the move by the Electoral Commission (EC) to rerun the Kpandai parliamentary election as “indecent haste.”

Dr. Bawumia, who said this during a tour of Wa in the Upper West Region, disclosed that the decision by the EC to rerun the Kpandai parliamentary seat flouts ongoing judicial processes at the Supreme Court by the NPP’s candidate, Matthew Nyindam, to overturn a ruling by a High Court in Tamale that recently annulled the entire Kpandai parliamentary election results.

According to him, it is wrong for the EC to proceed to rerun the Kpandai parliamentary election as though the appeals filed by Matthew Nyindam have been determined.

The Electoral Commission, on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, announced that a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election will take place on Tuesday, December 30, following a directive from the High Court.

The Tamale High Court last month annulled the 2024 parliamentary election results for Kpandai, declaring the seat held by the NPP’s Member of Parliament (MP) vacant, citing several irregularities at several polling stations.

But Dr. Bawumia cited past cases of individuals and Members of Parliament such as James Gyakye Quayson, among others, who performed their parliamentary obligations until a final determination at the apex court.

He mentioned that the current approach adopted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government and some state institutions departs from the long-held democratic practices of the country.

He said, “Matthew Nyindam should be given his day in court. He has filed appeal processes at the High Court. He has filed for a judicial review at the Supreme Court, and none of those cases has been adjudicated so why the rush? Why the indecent haste?”

“To say the least, I’m very disappointed with what is going on in our country. It looks like our institutions of democracy and our tenets of democracy are being undermined,” he pointed out.

Dr. Bawumia also expressed surprise at the manner in which the MP is being denied a fair hearing in court and, therefore, called on all institutions, including Parliament, to respect the democratic institutions.

“I think that he is being railroaded, I think that this undermines our institutions of democracy, and I think that we should take a halt to these processes and allow him to have his day in court as others have done in the past,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia also bemoaned the rate at which the Kpandai case was rushed compared to other similar cases that had been adjudicated by the court.

He further cautioned the ruling government against using state institutions to undermine democratic principles of the state.

“When you start undermining its democratic pillars, you break it down and the consequences for the nation are very severe. Simply because you have power shouldn’t make you feel that you can run over your opponents and the principles of democracy,” he stressed.
