The Rotary Club of Kumasi has provided free medical screening and drugs to inmates at the Manhyia Prison.
The club also donated musical instruments to the prison in response to a request by the prison officials.
President of the Rotary Club of Kumasi, Nana Effah Mensah, stated that the club had always supported the Manhyia Prison and therefore did not hesitate to respond when the request came in.
According to him, the highlight of the day was the free medical examination and on-the-spot treatment provided by doctors who were on hand to provide free assistance as needed.
Nana Effah remarked that providing free screening and healthcare contributes to Rotary’s six priority areas, which guide its initiatives and interventions.
This is part of Rotary’s prevention and treatment vision, he said, adding that “prison inmates are not outcasts,” but rather persons undergoing some type of rehabilitation who required the society’s support.
He used the occasion to thank their partners for their support towards the exercise, especially the Panacea Pharmaceuticals, Trinity Hospital and the Manhyia Hospital for their constant support of Rotary club operations.
The Deputy Director of Prisons, Joseph Asabre, who is also the Commander of Manhyia Prisons, thanked the Rotary club for donating the supplies and offering free medical screening.
He also reiterated the call for society to support the reformation processes of prisoners.
“Though government is doing its best to support the inmates, individuals and groups should also come on board and offer a hand,” he said, noting that “crime fighting is a shared responsibility.”
The Rotary Club of Kumasi is the second oldest Rotary Club in Ghana. The club is an association of business and professional leaders who strive to promote goodwill, peace, and understanding around the world by performing community service and promoting ethics.
