The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, led by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has joined forces with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a renowned advocate for sustainable mining, to host the upcoming ‘Mining in Motion Summit 2025’.

The global gathering of industry leaders, policymakers, and investors from June 2-5, 2025, in Accra, is in line with President John Mahama’s vision for responsible and sustainable mining.

The gathering will convene global mining leaders, policymakers, investors, and sustainability experts to chart a sustainable future for Africa’s mining sector.

This strategic partnership underscores President Mahama’s calls for sustainable mining that benefits communities while protecting the environment, and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s longstanding commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable mining in Ghana. His Majesty has been a vocal advocate for environmental preservation and ethical resource extraction, and this event further solidifies his dedication to fostering dialogue and action on these critical issues.

As the largest gold producer in Africa, Ghana is uniquely positioned to lead this crucial conversation, making it the ideal destination for this critical gathering. The summit will serve as a strategic platform for local and international stakeholders to address pressing challenges, particularly illegal mining (galamsey), which has threatened ecosystems and communities.

Through high-level discussions, participants will explore innovative solutions, policy reforms, and best practices to formalise artisanal mining, restore degraded lands, ethical mineral sourcing, community-benefit mining models, among others, to integrate sustainable practices into Africa’s mineral value chains.

Commenting on the importance of the summit, Mr. Buah emphasised, “This summit is more than a conference—it is a call to action. Under President Mahama’s leadership, we are committed to ending the devastation of illegal mining while ensuring that Ghana’s mineral wealth benefits all citizens responsibly. By bringing together global experts, investors, and local stakeholders, we are not only showcasing Ghana’s leadership, but we will also develop actionable strategies to transform mining into a force for sustainable development and unlock investment opportunities.”

Key focus areas will include combatting illegal mining through regulation, technology, and community engagement, promoting environmental restoration and responsible resource extraction, strengthening partnerships between governments, traditional leaders, and industry players and attracting ethical investments by aligning Ghana’s mining sector with international sustainability standards.

With participation confirmed from African governments, international agencies, mining giants, and civil society, the Mining in Motion Summit 2025 will be a catalyst for policy reform and industry transformation. Ghana’s role as host reinforces its leadership in sustainable mining and its commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental and social responsibility.
