Lawyer Baffour Awuah being declared winner by Electoral Commission officials after the polls
LAWYER NANA Agyei Baffour Awuah has been elected to replace Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, aka Napo, as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate (PC) for Manhyia South.
He polled 376 votes and was followed in second place by his main contender, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, who also secured 141 votes.
The other contestants in the Sunday polls, James Owusu and Akwasi Coker Gyambibi, had seven and two votes respectively. The polls were held at the St. Louis Training College.
Lawyer Baffour Awuah, in his victory speech, pledged to unite the constituency to help Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Napo to lead the NPP to retain political power this year.
The parliamentary primaries became possible when the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and NPP PC for Manhyia South, Napo, was appointed as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Significantly, the election was held in a peaceful atmosphere, amid tight security as scores of policemen were seen standing at vantage points at the election venue.
Early on, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, lauded the NPP delegates in Manhyia South for making the polls peaceful.
He described the election as a family affair and said the various contenders should unite and offer their support to the winner in the interest of the party.
Wontumi also commended the Manhyia South election committee and NPP executives in the area for contributing to make the election an incident-free affair.
Madam Patricia Appiagyei, the NPP MP for Asokwa, urged the entire constituents in Manhyia South to rally behind Lawyer Baffour Awuah to help the NPP retain power.
