LeBron James
LeBron James scored 14 points on his Philadelphia 76ers debut as they defeated defending champions the New York Knicks 106-100 on the opening night of the NBA season.
The 41-year-old, who joined Philadelphia from the Los Angeles Lakers during the summer, also recorded seven assists as he began a record-extending 24th season in the league with his fourth franchise.
Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 28 points, while Jaylen Brown contributed 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists after joining the team from the Boston Celtics in a high-profile trade involving Paul George.
The Knicks celebrated their championship triumph before tip-off, raising their third title banner at Madison Square Garden following their victory over the San Antonio Spurs in last season’s NBA Finals, which ended a 53-year title drought.
However, Jalen Brunson’s 21 points and Karl-Anthony Towns’ 19 points and 12 rebounds were not enough to prevent defeat as Philadelphia took control in the third quarter and held on for victory.
“I could be a lot better,” James told NBC. “Still getting my rhythm, obviously just a little bit over two weeks with the new squad.”
In the night’s opening game, the Detroit Pistons rallied to beat the Boston Celtics 121-113.
Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren scored 22 points apiece, while Duncan Robinson added 21 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, as Detroit produced a decisive 23-0 scoring run.
Paul George led Boston with 38 points on his debut for the Celtics.
Meanwhile, reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points to guide the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 116-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 24 points, while Victor Wembanyama recorded 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks despite making just one field goal from 13 attempts.
