Malian, 38, Impregnates Girl, 15, In Walewale

The West Mamprusi Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Peter Simon Akabati

A 38-year-old Malian, Zebila Haruna, is in the grips of the West Mamprusi Divisional Police Command for allegedly defiling and impregnating a 15-year-old girl in Walewale in the North East Region.

The three months pregnant girl (name withheld) is a primary six pupil in a school in the West Mamprusi Municipality.

A teacher in her school informed a child rights activist about the incident, who reported the case to the police and the suspect was arrested.

The West Mamprusi Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Peter Simon Akabati, confirming the arrest to journalists, said the suspect had been charged with defilement and would be put before court.

Supt. Akabati expressed concern about the increasing number of defilement cases in the region and appealed to parents and opinion leaders to desist from resolving defilement cases at palaces.

The family of the victim confronted the suspect when they realized that the victim was pregnant but the suspect convinced the family that he would take care of the victim’s medical bills and the baby.

He went into hiding soon after making the promise but was later arrested.

The child rights activist, Mark Matthew Chancellor, who assisted police in arresting the suspect, said that was the third defilement incident involving the Malian.

He too urged the people to report such cases to the Police because they were criminal issues.

Mr. Matthew was optimistic that the prosecution of the suspect would serve as a deterrent to others like the suspect who took delight in defiling innocent girls.
