Man Of The Moment

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The 2024 General Election is about ten months away but the level of political activities indicates that the country is in the grips of election fever.

The stakes have become very high following the lecture delivered by the man of vision and destiny, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia last Wednesday.

Since Veep Bawumia stormed the political landscape, anytime he spoke, the NDC leaders caught serious flu but not cold.

The man of destiny has been a thorn in the flesh of former President John Mahama whose grasp of socio-political dynamics is empty beyond rhetoric.

We are very certain that the December elections is a contest between redefining the future of our youth anchored on the digital economy and the poor record of the past under the watch of John Mahama during which Ghanaians suffered years of dumsor, cancellation of teachers and nurses training allowances and payment of three months salaries to teachers who have worked for more than three years.

Sometimes we wonder whether Ghanaians would vote for John Mahama whose vehicle has the inscription, “The Last Journey” as against Veep Bawumia who when elected would have the space of eight years to execute his vision for Ghana.

We know there are interesting times ahead and Ghanaians can make a more informed choice when the two candidates, Veep Bawumia and John Mahama face off in a debate about their visions for the country. “It is gonna be between digital economy and 24-hour economy,” if we are allowed to slang here. The NDC would not hesitate to play back promises made by Veep Bawumia, but John Mahama must also be prepared to explain inconsistencies in his policy options while President of the Republic. However, we caution against politics of insults but concentrate on the issues that put bread and butter on the table of everybody. That is why we call on Ghanaians to “shine” their eyes to see the social intervention policies meant for everybody regardless of social status.

The NDC, supported by is allies in academia, media and civil society, so far are finding it difficult to stand up to the man of vision and destiny.

As for the NDC, its leader, John Mahama is suffering from poverty of innovation and even dreaming of any social intervention policy.

He accuses Ghanaians of suffering from short memory whereas he has no idea about things he said while he was President from 2012 to 2016.

When late President Mills died and John Mahama was made President, he outlined his vision too and listen to John Mahama then. “I believe that the NDC government deserves a second term to be able to build on the foundation it has laid in these four years, and I am certain that Ghanaians would vote for me and turn me from the spare driver that I have been described, into the actual driver of the bus leading us into the destination that we want…”

The only good thing that we can chronicle about the NDC is its penchant to be consistently inconsistent.

John Mahama is unable to recollect anything he said while he was President. The dangerous nature of John Mahama and the present leadership of the NDC is their inability to tell Ghanaians what President Mills achieved during his tenure.

We call on John Mahama to make public his own achievements including dumsor, so that Ghanaians can interrogate them.

Now faced with the dilemma of confronting Dr. Bawumia, the NDC has taken the fatalistic path of choosing a proxy to “combat” Vice President Bawumia. Why is John Mahama running away from Vice President Bawumia and has asked Adongo to speak on Wednesday to state the NDC vision? We can only say to Adongo, please bring it on.

Veep Bawumia is ready for him. Or is it a signal that Adongo would be on Mahama’s ticket, since the choice of running mate has become a headache for the honeymoon man, John Mahama.
