Some of the injured students. INSET: The accident scene

Kwame Adu Kyei, a science teacher of Mangoase Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality, has been confirmed dead whilst 48 students of the same institution were injured in an accident.

Reportedly, the incident happened on the Otukpelu road when the students and the teacher were going to Krobo-Odumase for a regional cadet programme on Saturday morning.

The deceased and the students were onboard a bus with registration number GV – 1953 -14. Unfortunately, the bus veered off the road and somersaulted.

The driver of the bus, who is currently on admission, lost control while negotiating a curve on the road, causing the bus to veer off; it somersaulted when he attempted to apply the brakes.

The victims, who sustained various degrees of injury, were rushed to the Atua and St. Martins De Porres Hospitals for treatment. However, one student who is in critical condition after sustaining a fracture in the leg has been referred to the Koforidua Regional Hospital for further treatment.

Marylove Nai Williams, a senior nursing officer at the Atua Government Hospital told DAILY GUIDE that “they brought in 50 people, a teacher, a driver, and 48 students. They were seriously injured so all the workers are busy working on them. One of them had a fractured leg so he has been referred to the Koforidua Regional Hospital for treatment”.

At press time on Sunday, the headmaster of Mangoase SHS told DAILY GUIDE that 38 students among the victims were treated and discharged on Sunday morning while the rest are still on admission receiving treatment.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Atua Government Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
