The Police in the Brong Ahafo Region have launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked market women on the Atebubu-Yeji Highway last Sunday and robbed them of an unspecified amount of money, mobile phones and other personal effects.
According to the police, the armed robbers launched the attack at Premukyeae when the passengers, mostly traders, were travelling to the Yeji Market in the Pru East District on board a Sprinter Bus with registration number GW 76 35-15.
Chief Inspector Kingsley Oppong, the Regional PRO, who confirmed the story to DAILY GUIDE, said the incident occurred around 1 pm.
“A Good Samaritan alerted radio stations in Techiman and the police quickly sent a signal to Atebubu District Police, who responded but the bandits escaped before they got there,” he said.
“The armed robbers escaped before our men got there. They searched the nearby bush and found nothing, but we assure the victims that we are collaborating with community members to arrest them.”
He said the recent false information that sought to suggest that armed robbers were about to attack traders at Yeji Market disrupted activities in the town.
“It created fear and panic among the traders so activities were disrupted in the market,” the Police PRO said.
He said as a result, the command mobilized police personnel in the region, as well as the SWAT Team from Accra to secure the market.
Chief Inspector Kingsley Oppong entreated traders in the area to go about their normal duties and appealed to the public to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of criminals.
